Large sized Fang Ngil mask from Gabon Africa circa 1910s.
The Ngil were a powerful 'Male Only' secret society originating within the Fang people of Gabon.
They were tasked with administering justice, policing the community and they also formed a barrier between good and evil.
The Ngil Secret Society were formally outlawed by the French in the 1920s.
Traditionally, the Ngil Ngontang mask would have been worn during initiation ceremony of new members, funeral of a supreme chief, or whilst administering tribal justice and other such special occasions.

Product Details

The shape of this mask is tapered from the top downwards to a slim protruding mouth/chin.
It has arched eyebrows which flow into it's long wedge shaped nose.
Most of the facial area is covered in a white pigment, with the forehead in dark red.
Also present on both cheeks and on the forehead are carved 'Nsibidi' scarification on both cheeks and on the forehead.
The eyes are small and oval.
The mouth is the usual stylised oval at the very bottom, coloured with a russet pigment.
There is a dark band around the face towards the ears. 
The mask has black protrusions for ears and a dark crested top.
Very elegant mask.
Can be mounted on a stand or hung on a wall.

Dimensions 56cm high x 23cm wide x 16cm deep.

Product Condition

Very good antique condition.
Shows some signs consistent with age.
